Greetings!
Every
Other Thursday, you’ll get this short, fun, relevant newsletter. It will contain a quote or smile about the
library and those who love it, an idea you can use to promote your library or
reading in general, a Common Core implementation idea and a shameless plug for
the programs I offer. Enjoy!
If
you are new to EOT or have missed any previous issues, you can read them all at
www.smartlibrarians.com. And please tell your
friends about it!

Library Quote/Smile
“In
my view, nineteen pounds of old books are at least nineteen times as delicious
as one pound of fresh caviar.”
Anne Fadiman, American Author
“One
of the great values of reading is that is gives the reader empathy for others. It
allows the reader to connect with others outside his or her personal experience
in a way that few other activities can. By reading you get to know what it
feels like to be the new kid, to have to wear glasses, or to win a trophy. I
think there is a reason that there are very few playground bullies who are also
well read!”
Tommy Johns, Editor of Every Other Thursday
Encouraging reading – from 45 Ideas in 45 Minutes
18. A
recent survey indicates that the top five things that principals want are:
1.
Increased test scores
2. Improved
test scores
3. Better
test scores than last year
4. Greater
test scores
5.
Increased test scores
Since
EVERY study done in the past 50 years shows that reading helps advance scores
in EVERY other area of study, encourage the principal (and the school board) to
sign on to the idea that a well-stocked and well-staffed media center should be
a priority. Promoting reading can give your principal what she wants!
Common Core Tip
Chances
are that following the recent election and after having the first parent
conferences of the year, your students’ parents may have a negative and inaccurate
view of Common Core. Regardless of your personal feelings about it, it is what
we have to work with right now. This is an EXCELLENT article you can distribute
to your teachers to help them help parents understand some of the challenges of
transitioning to this VERY different approach to education.

Here’s
what your colleagues have to say about the programs I offer:
"We
just had Tommy Johns perform for the entire school and he was great. 'Awesome'
was the comment of one of our 1st grade teachers! Tommy is very professional
and entertaining. Another teacher commented that she really appreciated the
fact that the assembly was so academically oriented."
Karen Liebert, International Studies
Elementary Charter School, Albany, GA
“Book
him. You won't be sorry.”
Louise Brown, Lena Cagle Library,
Bridgeport, AL
