Reading Changed my Life!

Kelly Carlos writes:

“As an emerging author, most people approach me and say, “How awesome!  What inspired you to write a novel?”

“My first answer is “Because I love to read.”

“Ever since childhood, I loved to read novels and magazines.  Reading through a National Geographic magazine, I imagined myself in a hundred different worlds: floating down the Amazon river in a canoe, wearing a seal-skin parka huddled in an Alaskan igloo, or riding a bicycle with an umbrella straw hat down a Thailand street market.  Even as a young adult, picking up an Isabelle Allende novel, I could delve into a romantic adventure and really feel like I was a part of the story.  It didn’t matter if I was only sitting in my living room, or lying on my bed, or swinging on my porch swing.  It didn’t matter that I rarely left my house, other than to go to school.  I could travel through words, and through my imagination.  Reading opened my mind to diverse traditions in our diverse world.”

If They Only Knew! – Marketing your Media Center

Marketing is everything you do to place your products and services in the hands of people who would benefit from using them. Continuing on the theme of giving your principal what she wants (higher test scores are the top 5!), there’s this:

"It is more than ironic that school districts are willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on reading programs and staff development which have had limited success in boosting test scores, but are unwilling to invest in school library programs that show direct correlations to student success."
~ Douglas Achterman, 2008 Study of California School Libraries

Last week I mentioned showing your boss the research that supports the importance of what you do. Did you do it yet?

Just one more happy librarian!

“Tommy is a delight to work with, from start to finish. I appreciated the information he sent ahead of time. I appreciated his flexibility.  Most of all, I appreciated the way he interacted with the kids before and after the program. He has a magic touch, in more ways than one.

“Oh, and the shows were terrific, too — full of books, jokes, magic, science, puppets, and audience participation. The kids had a ball!”

Digital Natives Prefer WHAT?

This is interesting. It seems that even kids who have ALWAYS had digital content available still prefer BOOKS! Check it out here!

If They Only Knew! – Marketing your Media Center

Marketing is everything you do to place your products and services in the hands of people who would benefit from using them. This week we continue looking at your market by looking at what your principal and administration need from the media center.

Top 5 things Principals/Administration want:
1.   Better test scores
2.   Improved test scores
3.   Higher test scores
4.   Increased test scores
5.   Test scores that are better than last year

Great news! Research show that a well-stocked media center, staffed by a well-trained media specialist can increase test scores. When I Googled that sentence, five of the first six results pointed to DIFFERENT studies that supported this premise. Show your principal this research and back it up with collaboration, lessons and resources and you’ll have a new champion! Many have found success getting teachers to agree to collaboration by first convincing the principal of the value of it!

When you promote the media center, keep the “customer’s” NEEDS in mind. Fortunately, the media center can help them in every one of these areas!

Don’t just talk about the stuff in the library; talk about how it affects them. Everyone is tuned into their favorite radio station, WIIT-FM. What Is In This For Me? Find ways to make what you do and what you provide relevant to what they need.

Refreshing!
“Your show was very refreshing. Everyone loved the rat and the hippo (puppets). The teachers and I appreciated the warm, encouraging atmosphere that you conveyed to the children about reading and the library. We hope to see you again soon. Thanks!”

One bright spot from the Super Bowl

Many of you have heard of Malcom Mitchell, the UGA football player who discovered the magic of reading as a college student. The NFL rookie played in the Super Bowl for that OTHER team on Sunday, but his story is inspiring and reminds us that what we do to promote a love of reading can change lives. You can read his story here and find out about his book here.

Trust me on this. This will be a few minutes of your time well spent!

The Biggest Classroom

The person with the biggest classroom in the school has a BIG job! You have to serve the needs of the youngest students to the oldest. You have to help the first-year teacher as well as the 30 year veteran. You are there at the last minute when the superintendent shows up and decides to read to a class, but she didn’t bring a book. You rescue those with tech problems and are a hero to the kid who has finished one series and is looking for another one.

What you do matters to a lot of people. It’s a good thing that you are so amazing! Keep up the good work!

Quotable!

“Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it’s a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it’s a way of making contact with someone else’s imagination after a day that’s all too real.”
-      Nora Ephron

If They Only Knew! – Marketing your Media Center

Media centers and media specialists are underappreciated and misunderstood. Many people in your school and most of your school boards do not have a real grasp of the VALUE you and your classroom bring to the campus and the educational process.

At the local level, there is only ONE person who can change this misperception – YOU! The solution is MARKETING! Marketing is everything you do to place your products and services in the hands of people who would benefit from using them. It’s not just advertising, though that’s part of it. It includes the hours you are open, the services you provide and the way they are offered, and perhaps most importantly, the story that is told about your media center. Over the next three weeks we will look at:

-      Your market (people)
-      Your products/services
-      The ways your products and services can benefit the people you have identified as your market

What she said!

Marketing for Smart Librarians

I love performing for your students. It’s my favorite part of the job! A close second is when I get to go to media specialist meetings and lead one of the 5 workshops I offer. In every one of the almost 100 newsletters I have written, I have shared from my most popular workshop, 45 Ideas in 45 Minutes. Starting this year, I will be talking about marketing your media center to students, colleagues, administrators and the politicians who make decisions about what you do without having any idea of your value to your school. Just like 45 Ideas, this material is all based on real world, practical ideas that WORK! Enjoy!

Lady Bird Johnson

If They Only Knew! – Marketing your Media Center

The media center has WAY more to offer your students and colleagues than they realize – and part of the reason they don’t know it is that you haven’t been EFFECTIVELY telling them what is there. If they only knew the real value of the media center and a highly trained media specialist, they would utilize it more than ever! And if the administration and politicians in power knew what you offered, they would never consider cutting funding, space, or assistance.

During the next several weeks, I will share with you the basics of marketing your media center in a way that educates, informs and inspires your clients to value and use the services you offer, and to tell their peers about it. This crash course in “tooting your own horn” will inspire you to begin the New Year with a practical plan to shine the spotlight on the biggest and most important classroom in the school.  And it will show you how to promote without sounding like an annoying infomercial on late night TV. I think you are going to LOVE this!

I LOVE to Read!

It’s not just something I say. It’s the TRUTH! I LOVE to read! Newspapers, magazines, books, websites, t-shirts, signs on the wall…if it’s got words on it, I want to read it!

Every Monday morning, for example, I read Gina DeLapa’s Monday Morning Pep Talk! It’s a free weekly newsletter that is relevant, fun and easy to read. In just 3-5 minutes, I get information, encouragement and something to think about.

For instance, this week I read this nugget:

“People who are great at what they do are willing to invest in their abilities, willing to sweat, even willing to look foolish. They may get complimented on being a "natural," but they know natural ability doesn't begin to tell the whole story.”

That sounds like a media specialist to me!

Click here and look at the top right corner of the page to find out how to subscribe to Gina’s newsletter. You’ll thank me for it!

Quotable!

“You should never read just for “enjoyment.” Read to make yourself smarter! Less judgmental! More apt to understand your friends’ insane behavior, or better yet, your own! Pick “hard books.” Ones you have to concentrate on while reading. And…don’t let me ever hear you say, “I can’t read fiction. I only have time for the truth.” Fiction is the truth, fool! Ever hear of “literature”? That means fiction, too.”
John Waters, Writer, Author, Actor, et.al.

Encouraging reading – from 45 Ideas in 45 Minutes – Getting the Work Done

29. Recruit and TRAIN volunteers to help with checkout, shelving, website, checking in orders. Whether you call them Media Moms or just helpers, they need to feel confident that they know what they are doing and that it is important work. You MUST train regular volunteers, if you hope to retain them. You also must appreciate them and let them know that you do.

A well trained, appreciated volunteer who feels that she is making a difference is an UNBELIEVABLE asset and can be an amazing advocate for you. Principals listen to parents, and media moms can be passionate friends of your library.

More on this topic next time!

Really Truly Thankful

Looking Ahead!

It’s November

Leaves are falling, the election is over, and ALL those holidays are looming large on the horizon. Like every other kid I knew growing up, I have always loved Christmas. But as I have gotten older, I have started really enjoying Thanksgiving more and more. Partly because of the food, largely because of the family, but MOSTLY because it reminds me and others I know to be thankful. Thankful for people who mean so much to me, for opportunities to discover and grow, for simple things and complicated – and for contemplating things that go unnoticed or underappreciated for much of the rest of the year.

One of those things I am really grateful for is a love for reading and the ability to do so – whether I am reading directions, the new Jack Reacher novel, super hero books to my grandson, or a blog about library work. Being a reader has made my life (and, I suspect, yours!) so much richer. And it is pretty awesome to be a part of a team of people who spend much of their lives instilling that love in others. Thanks for letting me play!

And keep up the good work!

Quotable!

“We don’t need to have just one favorite book. We keep adding favorites. Our favorite book is always the book that speaks most directly to us at a particular stage in our lives. And our lives change. We have other favorites that give us what we most need at that particular time. But we never lose the old favorites. They’re always with us. We just sort of accumulate them.” — Lloyd Alexander, Newbery Winner

Encouraging reading – from 45 Ideas in 45 Minutes – Getting the Work Done

I saw a bumper sticker that said “What I need is more time, more money, and less $%#@&* from you people!” There never seems to be enough time or money to get the work done and many media specialists have lost hours and personnel, and some have even been moved to the classroom for part of the day. Here’s one way to make the best of the situation.

28. Get substitute teachers to come and help in the Media Center during planning period. If you have two subs per day who will help for 30 minutes per day, you will get 5 hours of help each week. If you have set tasks for them to do so that you don’t have to stop and tell them/show them what you want, it becomes a time saver, not a burden. Once subs get the hang of it, you have help every day! Since some of your subs are also parents at your school, you can begin training media center volunteers!

Looking Ahead to Spring and the End of the Year

“Teacher In-Service Training” – many times, that phrase strikes worry and concern in the heart of the media specialist. The county or your local school provides learning opportunities for classroom teachers and so that it won’t be unfair, you have to attend. What if there were sessions designed just for media specialists? Would THAT make the time more worthwhile?

I can help. Check out the topics I offer at little or no cost to groups of media specialists at www.tommyjohnspresents.com/tjp/teachers/. I’d love to come to your district or regional training event and be a part of your professional development!

Let me know how I can help! See you next week!
